Whitney Houston was laid to rest yesterday at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, New Jersey. The singer was buried next to her father, John RussellHouston, who died in 2003. The burial was a small "family-only" affair, unlike Saturday's star-studded funeral in Newark.
Alicia Keys, R. Kelly and StevieWonder were among the performers at the "home-going" service at New Hope Baptist Church. Kevin Costner, CliveDavis, Tyler Perry and Whitney's cousin Dionne Warwick were among the speakers.
Costner gave an emotional tribute to his Bodyguard co-star. He recalled how the singer was unsure about starring in the 1992 hit. "The Whitney that I knew, despite her worldwide success and fame, still wondered, 'Am I good enough? Am I pretty enough? Will they like me?' It was the burden that made her great, and the part that caused her to stumble in the end." He ended by saying, "So off you go, Whitney. Off you go. Escorted by an army of angels to your heavenly father. And when you sing before him, don't you worry. You'll be good enough."
Stevie Wonder spoke of once having "a little crush" on Whitney before doing a version of his 1982 hit "Ribbon in the Sky." R. Kelly performed the 2009 song he wrote for Whitney, "I Look to You." Alicia Keys sang "Send Me an Angel." Whitney's "I Will Always Love You" was played as the casket was carried out of the church.
Bobby Brown appeared, but only briefly. He reportedly left after getting into an argument with his ex-wife's family over seating for his nine-person entourage. Brown issued a statement, saying, "My children and I were invited to the funeral of my ex-wife Whitney Houston. We were seated by security and then subsequently asked to move on three separate occasions. I fail to understand why security treated my family this way and continue to ask us and no one else to move. Security then prevented me from attempting to see my daughter Bobbi-Kristina. In light of the events, I gave a kiss to the casket of my ex-wife and departed as I refused to create a scene."
Bobbi-Christina To Rehab? The New York Daily News is reporting 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown holed up in a hotel room Saturday night, “getting high” as family and friends scrambled to locate her. “It’s a horrible situation for everybody,” a family friend told the website. “They tried to save Whitney, and it didn’t work. Now with Bobbi Kristina, they fear the same thing is happening again, and they won’t be able to stop it, either.”
